#jamaissansmoncochonou

Concrete Project N˚1

A basic if now not classic building material, concrete has a varied and complex history in the world of architecture and art. When you think of Marcel Breuer and Le Corbusier, or the Eastern Bloc or Sol Le Witt and Donald Judd, you think concrete.

Taking my cues from the minimalists, I poured my own mixture of concrete into moulds and the results are sculptural objects that create absurd settings for brightly-colored accessories of the fall season. In the south of France, I set myself up in an old barn — after two days of cleaning it was transformed into a makeshift studio.  I worked a week on the wooden moulds and making the bespoke concrete blocks (I went through 450 kilograms of concrete).  And finally I spent several days shooting in the summer’s morning light.

Benoit Pailley presents this collaboration with Italian artist Andrea Bianconi and stylist Alice Bertay.
With this assignment for Double, Pailley brought to life Bianconi's art practice of sculpture, collage and painting. Bianconiinventscostume accessories in the manner ofhis work that reveal his preoccupations(paranoia, fantasi and escapism) while Bertay stryles hiscast of characters.
Like his sculptures, Bianconi, now the subject, is posed in a gallery environment of gray floor and white wal, while Pailley assumes the role of artist and manipulates his form/model into contortions that are surreal, humorous and bizarre.

Tasked with the editorial assignement from Double Magazine to develop a jewelry feature titled "Unmonumental"for March 2009, Benoit Pailley was campbell to engage with the economic and political turmoil in this moment.

Combining jewelry with found objects painted black, Pailley creates minimalist dioramas and places them in a gallery setting. These meticulous installations frame a story of the tension in the war and religious, and the fragility of freedom and human nature.

These striking imagesworks on two levels; they symbolize a tumultuous moment in history with dark humor and on a graphic level, these installation showcase unique designs of contemporary jewelry from the most prestigious houses.
